Why we’re hooked on the ‘Fisherman Aesthetic’ - one of 2025’s biggest design trends.

Posted by on

One of Pinterest Predict’s big trends for this year is the ‘fisherman aesthetic’. Both a fashion and interiors trend, it’s all about capturing the feel of a laid-back maritime lifestyle through simple but charming prints, natural textures and nautical motifs (especially the sardine).

The trend follows a pattern with those of past years, such as the hugely popular ‘cottagecore’ which peaked in popularity during the pandemic. Rejecting modern, urban routines, cottagecore focused on an idealised version of countryside life from the past. Then came the quirkily named ‘coastal grandma aesthetic’, which similarly idealised rural life away from busy cities, focusing on the concept of a lifestyle both relaxed and comfortable yet luxurious and elegant.

The fisherman aesthetic of 2025 continues this pattern of trends centred around escapism from the negative aspects of modern life, idealising different forms of rural living and the nostalgic elements connected to them. Whether experienced personally through childhood holidays to the British coast or through books, TV and film, the concept of charming seaside life is something that resonates positively with a lot of people, so it’s no surprise to see the trend gaining popularity.

One of the key motifs of the trend is the sardine, alongside other key icons of the Mediterranean diet, such as olives, tomatoes and lemons – all strongly referenced in our s/s 25 Bon Appetit collection. The colour palette focuses on neutral, natural tones with pops of tomato red, navy blue and sea-glass green. Textures lean into those which feel natural, rustic and/or handmade, with materials such as cotton, glass and ceramic proving popular.

The fisherman aesthetic feels like a fresh take on the ever-popular nautical theme that we see take on different forms with different generations. Pinterest specifically mention Gen Z and Gen X in their summary, so we will perhaps see two slightly different variations as the two generations shape it in their own way.

We particularly love how it encourages a more sustainable attitude to home décor – incorporating vintage or hand-me-down pieces, a preference for natural materials and carefully choosing new pieces which are built to last and intended to be kept. We also love its charming nostalgic aspect, which inspires a simpler way of life focused on food, family and nature.
