VE Day 75th Anniversary Celebrations

Posted by Alice White on

More than ever we need something to look forward to; with the official VE (Victory in Europe) 75th anniversary celebrations postponed until later this year we are inviting you to carry on celebrating and stay at home for your very own street party on Friday 8th May. On VE Day 1945, millions of people took to the streets to celebrate together after over 6 years of devastating war. Although we are not able to gather together this year to commemorate this very special day in history, which marked the end of WWII in Europe, it should still be marked with remembrance and celebration.

Despite the current restrictions around socialising, there are ways that we can carry on celebrating. We suggest creating your own little street party at home; Set-up in the garden or decorate the front of your home or front garden - perhaps your neighbours will do the same allowing you to share the moment whilst raising a glass or waving from the other side of the gate. Our collection of Best of British party accessories are just the ticket for creating a celebratory table or adding a splash of patriotic colour to your home. Whether you’re in a townhouse with a front garden on to the street or a country location with a big back garden, get out there and hang your bunting with pride. There is no better time to celebrate community when we can’t all be together.

As part of our company’s campaign to carry on celebrating, our founder Clare took the opportunity to ask her parents, Roger & Barbara, about their memories of WWII and what life was like under the blackout. Why not ask your parents, grandparents, neighbours and friends for their own stories and memories of a truly historic day?

To make your VE day going with a swing, we have put together some handy tips and tricks below:

Bake: Why not bake a few sweet treats for VE Day and the Bank Holiday weekend. Cupcakes are a fun activity for kids to help with, especially the icing and decorating. For a classic cream tea, we suggest Mary Berry’s Scone Recipe, which can be found here: http://www.maryberry.co.uk/recipes/baking/classic-special-scones Ideal for a doorstep delivery to your neighbours.

Quiz: Don’t forget you can also download our printable VE day quiz and challenge your friends and family.

Tune in: The queen will be broadcasting a special VE day speech at 9pm on 8th May, to mark the occasion as her father, King George VI, did 75 years ago.

We are sure that the postponed VE Day and VJ Day celebrations, on the 15th August, will be magnificent and we look forward to celebrating with friends and family once again.
