Flowers make us happy - Selina Lake

Posted by on

A stylist and best-selling authour of 10 Home & Garden books, Selina is known for adding her botanical style to her projects through the use of fresh flowers and plants. Selina is a monthly contributor to Gardens Magazine and last year collaborated with Alitex to style a greenhouse at Chelsea Flower Show.

“It’s of course very difficult to name just one floral favourite when you are a flower lover ... but I have come to a decision the classic English rose provides me with the most happiness.

Roses just give us so much, beautiful blooms, delicious scents, and pretty petals that can be used for confetti & decorating cakes. The plants are versatile aswell, they can be used to add structure to the garden with climbers making romantic rose arches or ramblers scrambling across the roof of an old shed. I love their history & how roses of different shades of colour convey messages of love, sympathy & passion.

They are the most perfect cottage style perennial and infact were the first type of plants my husband Dave & I bought for our garden when we had reclaimed from the mass of weeds we had inherited with our new garden. We now have over 15 different roses in our garden, and I love them all. They include the same varieties I used make my wedding bouquet as well as new to me varieties I have discovered from visiting the RHS Flower shows. These are my first blooms of the season but what I’m most excited about this year is that our rose arch is now completely covered in buds & will soon be a complete pretty arch of my garden dreams.”
