Creating a Cosy Dining Space
Pandora Maxton shares her top 10 tips for creating a warm and inviting dining table for autumnal days and evenings.
"I believe that laying the table is like creating a piece of art. You start with a blank canvas (the table), and the possibilities are endless. It doesn’t need to cost much either. Do you have a theme? This will help you decide on the flowers, candles, and napkins. I usually follow a theme for ease.
1. Start with the table itself. Are you leaving it exposed or using a tablecloth? Tablecloths and table runners are a great way to mix things up. I nearly always use a table runner, maybe even two with the wider one underneath the second and thinner one. I use them directly on the table or on a tablecloth. This breaks the table up and adds a little interest.
2. Now choose your table mats. There are so many options. My favorites are wicker and slate. Slate is a good one as you can write names or notes on them with chalk. Layering is key. So far, we have the tablecloth, the runner, and now the mats. After you have laid out your cutlery, move on to the next step.
3. I put out my glassware: a wine glass, matching water glasses, and always a full carafe of water. Glassware can have a real impact on your table if you choose brightly coloured pieces.
4. Dinnerware: I have a few sets of dinnerware. More often than not, I opt for plain white, as it is versatile and goes with every scheme. I always add a side plate too, usually all matching. You might like the mismatched look, which can also feel less formal and more relaxed.
5. Napkins come in so many colours and patterns. They can be folded in all kinds of ways if that’s the look you want. I often fold my napkin then tie a ribbon around it and slip some foliage or decoration under the ribbon. This looks really pretty on the side plates.
6. I always add candles, both day and night and all year round. Either dinner candles, tealights, scented candles in a glass jar, or large pillar candles. Adding candles or dim lighting will cast a soft glow, making the space feel intimate and cosy. It’s a must!
7. Next, focus on centerpieces that add personality without overwhelming the table. Simple flower arrangements all down the table, small potted plants, or even seasonal items like pumpkins and pinecones add a touch of nature to the table. These elements create a welcoming ambiance without taking up too much space. You don’t need to spend money on flowers if your budget is tight. Freshly picked foliage will suffice.
8. Using wooden trays, wooden boards, or decorative bowls filled with fruit and nuts also brings an earthy charm to the table. The key is to balance beauty and practicality, ensuring there’s enough room for food and conversation.
9. Comfort is key for a cosy dining experience, so pay attention to the seating arrangement and comfort level. Soft cushions or throws on chairs can make seating more inviting and encourage lingering after a meal. You might also consider having a few extra blankets on hand if the dining table is set outdoors.
10. Finishing touches like personalised name cards or hand-written menus can add warmth and make guests feel special. Combining these thoughtful details will transform your dining table into a cosy, welcoming space perfect for any gathering."
